It probably comes as no surprise that California ranks first among states in generating electricity from solar power. The Golden State generated more than 40 percent of the U.S. total of 10,257 thousand megawatt hours in April, according to a Green Energy Solutions analysis of the most recent data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

But the rest of the top 10 might come as a surprise:

U.S. solar generation of electricity increased 14.1 percent in April compared with March. No state with meaningful production reported decreases in generation during that span, according to EIA.

Following are April and March generation in states with significant generation and the % change from month to month. States are listed in order of the amount of electricity generated by solar (including thermal), in thousand megawatt hours:

What about the future?

California’s status atop the rankings isn’t likely to change. The state reported the most photovoltaic module shipments in April – 113,886. The state with the second-most shipments was Texas, which had 97,917 for the month.

What percentage of each state’s electricity generation comes from solar?

Nationally, solar generated about 2.4 percent of the electricity produced in April in the U.S. Following are the states that produce the largest percentage of their power from solar:
